Arrest after pedestrian hurt in suspected hit-and-run
POLICE APPEAL FOR INFORMATION AS WOMAN IS QUIZZED
A woman has been arrested after a pedestrian was injured in a suspected hit-andrun incident in Sunderland.
The 29-year-old male victim is believed to have been struck by a vehicle in Bramwell Road, Hendon, at about 1.05pm yesterday.
Witnesses say a silver Citroen Xsara was involved, however, police have stated it is not yet clear whether his head injuries were caused by being struck by the vehicle or if he was assaulted.
Emergency services, including eight police cars, the force helicopter and paramedics rushed to the scene, andthevictimwastakento Sunderland Royal Hospital where his condition is described as non-life threatening.
The road was cordoned off for about two hours while accident investigators carried out their inquiries. A 24-yearold woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in custody.
A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told the Echo they had heard a bang and went outside to find a man lying in the road.
The resident said cars often come around that corner at speed.
A witness told the Echo he saw the car involved turn into Noble Street.
He said: “I think the person was looking for somewhere to dump the car.
“When I finished work about an hour later. I saw the car again, it had been abandoned at the bottom of Gray Road, a few doors up from the Co-Operative funeral home.”
Northumbria Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A spokesman said: “Officers are carrying out inquiries to establish how he came by his injuries.
“It is not yet clear if he has been struck by a vehicle or if he has been assaulted.
“There are reports of a silver-coloured Citroen-type vehicle having been seen in theareaatthetime.
“Officers want to speak to anyone with information.”
