Tigers rue off-day as Foxes move clear of drop

-

Hull City remain just above Sunderland in the Premier League relegation zone after their winless away run extended to 13 with Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at reviving Leicester.

Sam Clucas gave Marco Silva’s Tigers the lead, but Christian Fuchs, Riyad Mahrez and a last-gasp Tom Huddlestone own goal saw the Foxes climb five points clear of the bottom three.

Left-back Andrew Robertson admitted: “We can have no complaints about the result whatsoever. They were better than us all over the park, even though we went 1-0 up.

“It was fantastic to see Sam Clucas get his first Premier League goal. It was a great moment for him personally, but overall we didn’t do enough in the game and Leicester were deserving of the three points.

“Since the manager has come in, we’ve been quite consistent with our performances but this was definitely our worst display since he took charge.

“It was very much an offday for us. I don’t think any of us showed up and, at this stage of the season, you can’t do that and expect to get anything from the game.”

Hull are now four points adrift of safety going into a huge clash at home to Swansea this coming weekend.

Boss Marco Silva said: “Of course, these are not good numbers. We need to be strong and to fight, like we did (on Saturday).

“But the most important thing is when we have a chance to score, we score. Goals are the most important thing in matches.

“Now is the moment to rest and analyse the game with the players and then we work towards the next game against Swansea.”

“Leicester started strongly and we didn’t match the same level. We got better but then they had a good reaction.”

Interim Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare hopes Mahrez’s goal against Hull will signal his return to form.

The Algerian, much like the Leicester team, has struggled to reproduce last season’s form which saw him voted the PFA Player of the Year. However, there was a glimpse of that magic as he tormented Robertson before firing right-footed into the bottom corner of the net for Leicester’s crucial second goal.

Shakespeare said: “Riyad Mahrez has been frustrated with himself. We told him to go out there and be himself. It is the Mahrez of old with the goal he scored.

“Goals give players confidence and hopefully now he can go on a run. Results give players confidence.

“Back-to-back wins will give confidence for the last 11 games of the season.”

It was a huge win for the champions, who are now five points clear of the relegation zone.

Shakespeare added: “In terms of our points, it has been a turnaround.

“Everyone looked at the game against Liverpool on Monday and to get the three points under pressure was important, but to back that up with another win was vitally important.”
