Porto await winners of Cats’ semi
Sunderland Under-23s will meet Porto in the final of the Premier League International Cup – if they get past Norwich City in their semi-final.
Elliott Dickman’s Black Cats head to East Anglia on Friday night to take on the Canaries, with a place in the final up for grabs.
Porto’s B team qualified for the final with a closefought 1-0 success at Swansea City on Saturday, with on-loan Brazilian striker Wenderson Galeno on target for the Portuguese side.
Swans coach Gary Richards, whose side have been crowned champions of Premier League 2’s Division Two, said: “We are disappointed not to get to the final, but we have to be proud of what we have achieved in this competition this season.
“To lose at the semifinal stage is very disappointing, but Porto are a very good side who play their football in the second tier of the Portuguese league system against professional sides.
“Them playing men’s football every week was the difference for me.
“They are a very impressive team and we have nothing to be ashamed of.”
Richards added on swanseacity.net: “Both sides created chances throughout, but the pleasing aspect is that we were in the game until the very end. Our young players have definitely learnt a lot from this tournament .We hope to be involved again next season for a chance to go one step further.”
Dundee United lifted their first trophy since 2010 by beating Scottish Championship rivals St Mirren 2-1 in the Irn-Bru Challenge Cup final.
