Outer space rocks for students

-

Youngsters at a city primary school found that outer space really rocks.

The students at St Paul’s CE Primary in Sunderland were lucky enough to receive an exciting ‘Play in a Day’ experience when Konflux Theatre in Education visited the school with its Planet Rock performance and workshop.

Planet Rock blasted off from the Waterworks Road primary school taking pupils into the vastness of outer space.

They were able to discover the answers to questions such as “what’s out there?” “who’s out there?” and “how do we get there?” with the Konflux Facilitator equipment.

The Play in a Day visit to St Paul’s took place during British Science Week, which is a ten-day programme of science, technology, engineering and maths events and activities for people of all ages.

During the visit to the Ryhope school, Key Stage 2 children discovered what makes our own planet so special.

A spokesman for Play in a Day said: “They heard about the Milky Way, explored other planets and learned about the stars, sun and moon. They learned why astronauts have to be fit, why the stars shine at night and even be able to name the planets in order from the sun.

“During the workshop, the children also learned about Galileo and found out why his theories frightened people.”

Planet Rock is an exciting, lively and thought-provoking day-long rehearsal which culminates in an interactive performance to peers and parents at the end of the school day.

The children work together as actors to create a fun, informative and actionpacked 15-minute performance which explores a wide range of topical issues about space.

Konflux Theatre, which can also provide schools with a Play in a Day entitled ‘Inventors and Inventions’, have a portfolio of over 60 curriculum-based topics to choose from.
