Washington troubles go on with 2-1 defeat at Penrith

Washington suffered a 2-1 defeat last night away to Penrith in Ebac Northern League Division One.

The Mechanics were chasing survival points at Penrith, but went behind when Martin Coleman fired in an unstoppabl­e shot from 20 yards.

Michael Laws equalised for Washington after 33 minutes when he volleyed home.

But substitute Jamie Street put Penrith in front when he scored from close range on 76 minutes.

South Shields are now just 11 points behind neighbours North Shields with four games in hand, after they comfortabl­y beat Newton Aycliffe by 4-0 at Mariners Park.

The Mariners got off to an excellent start when Daniel Mitton headed into his own net, to give Shields a 1-0 lead and it was 2-0 on 27 minutes when Jordan Blinco finished from close range.

Seven minutes later it was 3-0 when Julio Arca curled in a fantastic ball from the right and Iulien Petrache headed home.

Scott Howes was sent off for two yellow cards in the 71st minute for Newton Aycliffe and deep into injury time Michael Richardson fired in a free kick from the edge of the box to make it 4-0.

Consett entertaine­d Morpeth Town and took an early lead when Luke Sullivan scored after just five minutes from the edge of the box.

Consett doubled their lead on 27 minutes, when Jordan Nellis headed home at the back post, but Morpeth reduced the deficit on 34 minutes, when Mark Davison powered home a Ben Sayer corner to make it 2-1.

Morpeth equalised when Chris Reid headed home following a corner in the 58th minute, and a brilliant comeback was complete when Mark Davison put the visitors in front with another header.

The game was safe on 77 minutes, when Joe Walton made it 4-2.

West Auckland Town travelled to Dunston UTS in need of survival points, but went down by 2-0. The home side took a 33rd minute lead, when striker Dale Burrell, volleyed home to make it 1-0.

Goalkeeper Lewis Graham saved a penalty from Scott Heslop in the 58th minute, but he was beaten again when Dunston doubled their lead through Warren Byrne, when he made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute.

In the Evo-Stik Premier Division, Spennymoor Town travelled to Warrington Town and came away with three crucial promotion points with a 2-0 win thanks to two goals from Glen Taylor.
