Welcome defensive boost ahead of key Watford clash

-

Sunderland boss David Moyes looks set to be able to call upon skipper John O’Shea for Saturday’s huge clash with Watford.

The Republic of Ireland centre-back was left needing stitches in his leg after a controversial challenge from Gareth Bale in last Friday’s game against Wales, though he did complete the goalless draw.

O’Shea did not play for Ireland on Tuesday as expected, but is understood to be running again and ready to take his place at Vicarage Road.

O’Shea spoke about his treatment after the game, saying: “I can’t remember how many stitches it was.

“The doctor had to stick some in deep and a few dissolvable ones on top. Hopefully it will heal quickly.”

His availability will come as a huge relief to Moyes, with Lamine Kone also recovering from a knee injury picked up in training before the 0-0 draw with Burnley 12 days ago.

Both will be expected to compete with Jason Denayer for the centre-half berths at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon, with Sunderland seven points adrift of safety.

Papy Djilobodji has not featured for the club since his red card in the 2-0 defeat to West Brom in January.

A high stakes game like Saturday would not be the environment in which the manager is likely to want to reintroduce him.

Elsewhere, Seb Larsson played 90 minutes in Sweden’s 2-2 draw with Portugal.

Meanwhile, tickets for Sunderland’s trip to Leicester City next Tuesday, April 4 (KO 7.45pm), are now on general sale.

Tickets are priced at £30 for adults, £25 for U22s, £20 for U18s and £10 for U12s.
