A welcome return to the polls?

-

Ah, just what everyone wanted ... another trip to the polling booth!

Theresa May may claim to have her finger on the nation’s pulse, but few will thank her for sending us to the ballot box again.

Her surprise call has been made, she tells us, in the national interest to help guarantee certainty and stability. Nothing to do with the Tories riding high in the polls then?

The last time we went to the polls, certainty and stability were nowhere to be seen. This time round we would hope for events to turn out differently.

One thing is for certain, the politicians are dealing with a public arguably more sceptical of our political leaders than ever before.

After the mud-slinging, scare-mongering and questionable pledges of the EU referendum, any promises made in the run up to the this election will be put under the greatest of scrutiny.

Pledges writ large on the side of buses are unlikely to be accepted without question this time round.

And woe betide any political leaders trying to push through a Project Fear campaign.

It just won’t wash this time.

After the uncertainty of Brexit, could we be heading for an honest election built on truth and trust? We certainly hope so. All the parties have had their difficulties in recent months, so perhaps an election is just what is needed to focus attention.

And that focus must be on serving the best interests of the public.

No false promises, no gimmicks, no mud-slinging, no back-biting ... just honest electioneering for the good of the people.

It’s what everyone wants - we’ll find out over the next few weeks whether any party can deliver.
