Twins are a bundle of joy!

- By Richard Ord

There may be one born every minute, but those babies are rarely anything like twins Jenna and Jayda.

They come about once every 36 years, or at least that’s the case at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Dubbed the ‘momo’ twins, the babies share just one placenta and one amniotic sac, and it’s a complicated business.

As beautiful and welcome additions as they are, the hospital will be glad of the rarity of momo twins.

The condition is extremely rare and brings with it life-threatening concerns. You have to feel for the parents who were told the youngsters had just a 50/50 chance of survival.

The pregnancy was further complicated when it was revealed the cord had wrapped around Jenna’s head twice!

Those who talk of ‘straightforward pregnancies’ are giving a backhanded compliment to the fantastic midwives and NHS staff who make the whole process run as smoothly as possible. The true worth of our NHS staff is how they perform when things are not so straightforward. Like the case of Jenna and Jayda.

Which is why it’s great to see parents Andrew and Stacey heaping praise on the NHS workers who handled the birth.

Andrew told the Echo: “The hospital told us they hadn’t had twins like this for 36 years, so most of the staff had never dealt with it.

“But, they were all absolutely superb throughout, we are so, so lucky to have the consultant we had and all the teams involved.” Too true. Our NHS is under fire from many angles, which is why we love to give praise when it’s due.

Thanks to their efforts, Jenna and Jayda have got their lives off to a great start. Well done everyone.
