Popular suburb just a short drive from the city centre

-

If you’re considering moving out of the city, an easy move to suburbia doesn’t mean having to leave it all behind, in fact Farringdon is only a 15-minute drive to the city centre.

“Farringdon is a council-built housing estate, erected in the 1950s,” says Catherine Calvert, property expert at Dowen estate agents.

This suburban area of Sunderland is only three miles south of the city centre and close to Thorney Close, Silksworth, East Herrington, Gilley Law and Doxford Park.

Ideal for young families looking to escape the madness of the city centre, Farringdon has seen an influx in young families moving to the area to take advantage of the affordable property prices and nearby schools.

“There is also a large social club, two churches (one which is Roman Catholic, the other being Anglican),” says Catherine.

“There are also two pubs and three shopping arcades, the Jubilee Centre, a community centre offering activities and learning opportunities for people in the area, a McDonald’s, and two residential homes for the elderly.”

Previously an area of farmland, Sunderland County Borough Council turned the area of Farringdon into an estate to cater for the growing population of the city.

“Although initially all homes on the estate were councilowned, today many residents have bought their own homes and it is very popular with families and young professionals,” says Catherine.

The area remains a sought- after destination for first-time buyers and investors, thanks to its affordability.

According to Dowen, a twobedroom ex-local authority property will cost around £70,000 to £80,000 and a three-bedroom ex-local authority property from around £80,000 to £90,000.
