The members of the Rotary Club of Sunderland welcomed an old friend and former St Michael’s Ward resident, Lynne Symonds, to their weekly Thursday lunchtime meeting at the Rosedene Hotel. Lynne’s work in providing educationa­l and training schools for children and young people in remotest Northern Ghana, has been supported by the club for more than 15 years. Lynne is pictured wearing a dress made for her by girls from one of the Ghanaian schools.

The next soup lunch and afternoon teas will be held in the Haver Hall of St Nicholas Church, Queen Alexandra Road, this Saturday from 3.30pm to 5pm.

St Nicholas Church will once again be the main base for the Community Connector’s Hub, a councilfun­ded project from its East Area Committee, which sees the church hall being used for a second year as a welcoming place for people in St Michael’s Ward, such as carers and those who would benefit from the company of others. Ashmore Residents’ Associatio­n will meet tomorrow at The British Legion Club, Grange Crescent, at 7.30pm.

St Michael’s Residents’ Associatio­n meets tomorrow in Auckland Homes, Hill View Road, at 6.30pm.

The regular Northumbri­a Police “PACT” meeting for St Michael’s ward will next be held at Auckland Homes, Hill View Road on Tuesday, May 9, at 6pm All residents who wish to meet representa­tives of the police team are welcome to attend.

St Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Ryhope Road, runs a mother and toddler group every Tuesday from 9.30am to 11.30am. All are welcome and there is no need to book.

Friends of Backhouse Park and Barley Mow Park will meet on Tuesday, May 9, at 6.30pm at the Back-on-theMap building (ex-Hendon library).

The next meeting of Thornholme Residents’ Associatio­n is on Monday, May 8, at Ashbrooke Sports Club, at 6pm.

Councillor­s Michael Dixon and Peter Wood, plus council officer Nicol Trueman, recently met with members of the organisati­ons that have received East Area Committee funding as part of the St Michael’s Ward Community Clean-Ups scheme. Susan Ferguson, (Blue Watch Youth Centre), Andrea Baxter and Julia Bentley (both Groundwork), in addition to Michal Chantkowsk­i and Daniel Krzyszczak, (both ICOS), all attended to agree locations/routes in the ward for their respective clean-ups. Lakeside Residents Associatio­n has been awarded a Sunderland Council Community Chest Grant to be used by its Hospital Visiting Team. The team has bought two emergency admission bags to be given to any resident who has no close relative living nearby and has been unexpected­ly admitted to hospital. These bags contain a large towel and branded toiletries, sufficient for a long stay in hospital. The funds will also be used by the team, which each week visits residents in hospital and after care in their homes. Members take with them a small gift such as fruit, sweets, magazine. Any patient who is well enough will be escorted to the hospital cafe for refreshmen­ts. All Lakeside Residents, who are admitted to hospital receive a get well card.
