There were cheers and tears as Bradley Lowery once again captured the hearts of football fans at the Stadium of Light.

The courageous five-yearold, who is battling childhood cancer neuroblastoma, was carried on to the Stadium of Light pitch as guest of honour by “best friend” and Sunderland AFC star striker Jermain Defoe to a rapturous reception by both Black Cats and Swansea fans.

Applause rang around the ground in the fifth minute while fans unveiled a banner in support of the Blackhall youngster in the stands.

Parents Gemma and Carl had initially feared Bradley – who turns six later this week – would be in too much pain to attend the match or that they might have to leave early, but he was determined not to miss out.

And despite seeing Sunderland lose 2-0, Bradley loved the whole day.

“He was in a lot of pain, but he had said he enjoyed it and had a lovely day,” said Gemma.

The family were guests of SAFC owner Ellis Short and chief executive Martin Bain in the Stadium of Light directors’ box: “He had fun kissing all the girls and getting lots of cuddles,” said Gemma.

“Then he went down to the Montgomery Suite and made the Man of the Match presentation to Jermain. He even got to say a few words.”

Stepping out onto the pitch and hearing the response from the stands had been an emotional experience: “The response from the supporters was absolutely fantastic, as usual,” she said.

“The Swansea fans, as well, were brilliant. It is very overwhelming. We really appreciate the support.

“It is absolutely fantastic and it does make a hard time a lot easier. We just wish all the other kids get the same support as Bradley.”

Bradley was the cover star of Saturday’s match programme, with the club donating all proceeds going to the Bradley Lowery Fund.
