SOUTHWICK GLORY IN DERBY FINAL THRILLER
CAPTAIN STOKELL MAKES SURE WITH KILLER THIRD GOAL TO SINK REDHOUSE LAST ORDERS
Southwick ended their impressive campaign with a second piece of silverware.
They overcame a welldrilled Redhouse Last Orders 3-1 in the final of the Total Sport Challenge Cup.
The First Division side took the game to Southwick, but it was the Premier side whomadethebreakthrough, courtesy of Anth Ross.
Southwick increased their lead after hot-shot John Butler smashed his effort past Redhouse keeper Shaun Metcalf.
Redhouse had a good spell and reduced the deficit as Marc McNulty was gifted a goal to make it 2-1.
But it was to be Southwick’s day and Anth “Turkey” Stokell sent the Southwick faithful into raptures as his effort found the net for a clinching third goal.
That secured a second cup of the season for Southwick, following their success in the Hendersons Butchers League Cup.
Ryan Morse stood out for Last Orders.
The final league game of the season was ninth Second Division as The Victory Club edged a 2-1 success at Washington New Tavern.
Star man Rob Calvert and Dean Machin did the damage for Victory, with Martin Harrison replying.
The win took Victory up to a fifth-place finish.
Hylton Castle TWR have had a memorable season, winning the Premier Division in style, losing just one league match.
They made it a league and cup double after beating TC Plastics in the Joe Holborn Memorial Cup final. The Hylton faithful dedicated their success to the late, great Norman Nellens.
The Stella enjoyed their debut season in the Sunderland Sunday League as they ran away with the Second Division title.
They had great encounters with Hendon Athletic and Washington Colliery but still came out with the league title.
Washington Colliery have had a great campaign as they earned the runners-up spot, pushing The Stella all the way and only missing out on goal difference, albeit Stella’s was 40 better.
Washington had success in the cup. beating Third Division Park View 2-1 in the final to lift the legendary Billy Pemberton Memorial Cup.
The Victoria Gardens secured back to back titles as they ran riot through the First Division to see them ply their trade in the Premier next season.
They owe a massive thanks to goal machine Martin “Gandhi” Hope as he hit 52 league goals, securing him the Golden Boot for the full league.
Cousin Callum Hope was not too far behind, scoring 38 league goals.
Tom Smith’s Lansdowne side also enjoyed success, winning promotion as runners-up. Smith now leaves on a high as he passes the reins on.
The Grange enjoyed an impressive first season in the Third Division and were the team to beat.
They managed to secure the league title by a solitary point, pushed all the way by The Park. Even their impressive league goal tally of 142 couldn’t give them the title.
Corey Steel earned the plaudits in his impressive season and was given the most man-of-thematch awards, a total of 13, throughout the whole league.
His impressive displays have gained him a transfer to Premier Division new boys Victoria Gardens.
