Marching back to the past at Beamish

-

Sights and sounds abound at Beamish Museum during the coming week.

On Saturday, May 27, you are invited to tap your foot along to the sound of the NASUWT Riverside Band, who will be performing in Redman Park bandstand, in The Town park, from 2pm to 4pm.

On the same day, you could become the star of the show, as a museum spokeswoman explains.

“Across the year we have amazing brass band performances at the museum, now it is your turn to have a go!

“Why not come along and try your hand at playing a brass instrument?

“Lanchester Brass Band will be joining us in Hetton Silver Band Hall, in The Pit Village, to give you a unique opportunity to have a blast.

“No previous experience is needed and all ages are welcome to get involved. The activity will run from 10am-4pm.”

There’s more music to enjoy the day after when The South Bank Brass Band will be performing in Redman Park bandstand, in The Town park, from 2pm to 4pm, while The Aycliffe and Brancepeth Brass Band will be taking centre stage at the same venue on Monday, May 29, between 2pm to 4pm.

On the same day, there’s a chance to learn about life during the Great War years.

“For over a decade, members of Wessington U3A War Memorials group have been researching the names of soldiers and their stories using the three Washington Great War memorials,” added the spokeswoman.

“Having recently made three HLF-funded films about Washington during the Great War and another called The Wear at War, the group have many fascinating tales to tell.

“The museum is delighted to welcome Peter Welsh, a member of the group, who will bring along examples of research materials and offer advice on aspects of family research relating to the First World War.

“Following its refurbishment by Beamish’s skilled Maintenance Team at the start of the year, Peter will be in The Pit Village chapel (next to the roaring fire!) during these unique sessions.

“The films, featuring local historians and interviews with direct relations of some of the men killed, will be screened in the chapel.

“Why not use your Unlimited Pass and enjoy this unique opportunity to learn more about the North East during the First World War?”
