Sunderland College students are the focus of a new exhibition which will open at Arts Centre Washington next month.

Artshow, which runs from June 9-16, is the culmination of years of work by students who’ve studied HND Art & Design and Foundation Degree Photography, and is their first opportunity to exhibit in a professional gallery space.

The Foundation Degree Photography students’ work ranges from documentary photographs of the fishermen of “The Gut” on North Shields fish quay; photographs of North East wildlife; family portraits by Perri Newton; images challenging notions of privacy and surveillance and street photographs of cafe culture.

There’s a variety of work on show from the college’s new HND in Art & Design. This will include glass-painted sculpture, fine art print making, large scale abstract painting, tradition oilpainted portraiture and even B-movie poster illustration.

Lee Guthrie, HND Art & Design course leader said: “It’s been a fantastic two years with these students and I’ll be sad to see them go. We’ve been on art trips as far away as New York and Berlin and it’s built a great camaraderie on the course.

“They have put a huge amount of work and passion into their art and this exhibition is going to be a real celebration of what they’ve achieved over the past two years.

“Arts Centre Washington has an ex- cellent reputation for putting on an exciting programme of community events, so we’re really pleased to be showing our work off here”

Robin Cowings, Foundation Degree in Applied Photography associate programleader, said:“Theworkinthisshow is the culmination of three years of hard work and photography from our amazing students.

“Our students are mature with fulltime jobs and have really worked hard to achieve the quality and strength of work on display here. It takes a great deal of courage and commitment to go back into education after many years off and to balance this with very busy working lives and still produce stunning work.”

Entry to Artwork at Arts Centre Washington is free. It will be on display from June 9-16.
