Trainer Dave Binns hopes that Sunderland fighter Warren Baister can earn a title shot sooner rather than later.

The unbeaten cruiserweight, whose record stands at five wins and no losses, fights at Rainton Meadows Arena tomorrow on a packed show which includes Sunderland prospect Isaac Macleod and Thornley’s Darren Surtees topping the bill against Ross Jameson.

Baister, 31, has only had five professional fights, but has an accomplished amateur background.

Peterlee-based trainer Binns, 55, said: “I would hope we can get him a title shot soon now he’s with MTK.

“He’s doing very well in sparring and looking very well, so really it’s a case of when and where.

“You’ve got a lot of other professional fighters who have a low number of amateur fights and that shows when they step into the pro game.”

“Warren has a good amateur background, which should stand him in good stead when he does eventually get more fights.

“He can go in a boxing ring with just about anybody in Britain at British title level.”

Baister is still yet to find an opponent for tomorrow night’s show and, with a knockout ratio of 80%, not many want to step in the ring with the Sunderland man.

North East boxing is certainly on the rise, with more shows being set up for boxers to showcase their talent.

Binns spoke of the how proud he felt to see young fighters coming through these types of shows.

“It’s fantastic for these fighters to have a platform,” he said of the Phil JeffriespromotedshowinHoughton.

“For many years, there wasn’t shows like this for fighters to be a part of.

“Because of Phil, there’s more shows being brought to this region.

“The likes of Tommy Ward winning the British title and Josh Kelly fighting on big shows, the North East lads are coming on leaps and bounds.”

Tickets are still available for tomorrow’s show and can be purchased on the door at Rainton Meadows Arena on the night.
