Martin’s mountain challenge
FUNDRAISER TAKES ON 24 PEAKS FOR CITY CHARITY
A fundraiser is putting his best foot forward to scale 24 peaks for a city children’s charity.
Martin Brooks will take on the 24 Peak Challenge in the Lake District, scaling England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, as well as Helvellyn.
The 42-year-old, who works as an admin assistant at Monkwearmouth Hospital, will take on the feat, walking around 15 miles a day, on May 27 and 28.
Money raised through sponsorship will be donated to Special Olympics Sunderland, which is based at the Raich Carter Centre in Hendon.
The organisation aims to help youngsters with learning disabilities find a pathway in to sport to competition level.
Martin, from Seaham, said: “I’ve always taken a keen interest in sport and have ran with Gateshead Harriers, Sunderland Hartant riers and Sunderland Strollers. I’ve also done the Great North Run a couple of times and the C2C bike ride.
“I’ve always found sport to be really important for health and mental well-being so I think it’s really impor- to give the opportunity of sport to young people with learning difficulties.
“It’s not just about sport either, Special Olympics is a great way for the community and families to come together. It’s a local charity and is voluntary so relies on donations and I feel proud to be able to help them.”
Kath Rooney from Special Olympics Sunderland said: “We’re very grateful for Martin offering to do this challenge to raise funds for us. We rely on funding, as well as volunteers to keep going.
