Sunderland Ladies Bowling Section at Ashbrooke Sports Club had a successful 2016 season and ended on a high winning the City of Sunderland Women’s Bowling Associatio­n League Cup. Further success was achieved by Jean Graham winning the Champion of Champions Trophy, plus Charlotte Bayliss and Lorraine Breheny winning the Mrs Moore Shield in the pair’s competitio­n. All the ladies are looking forward to the 2017 season, which is now underway and hope it will be another successful season.

Coun Peter Wood, a member of the Sunderland Circle of the Catenian Associatio­n, presented St Anthony’s student Rebecca Old with a cheque from the associatio­n’s bursary fund at a mass at St Cecilia’s Church, Ryhope Road. The Catenian Associatio­n is an internatio­nal organisati­on of Catholic men, who meet socially on a regular basis with the aim of strengthen­ing family life through fellowship and faith. Its bursary fund gives cash grants to young Catholic volunteers aged 16 to 24. Rebecca is planning to visit Cambodia in July with Camps Internatio­nal for three weeks’ voluntary work.

The Sunderland Branch of Parkinson’s UK will be attending a 30th birthday celebratio­n lunch, at the Sea Hotel, in South Shields, on Monday June 12. Any members wishing to go should contact the secretary on 0191385923­4, for menu choices, and transport options. There will be no meeting at Bede Tower in June. The next branch meeting will be on July 10, at Bede Tower, commencing 2pm when there will be a strawberry

afternoon tea. A warm welcome to all.

St John’s Methodist Church, Ashbrooke, will hold its summer fair on Saturday, June 17. There will be stalls and entertainm­ent. Admission is £3 with children free (admission includes cream scone and tea).

All 33,000 Rotary Clubs around the world are pledged to work for the eliminatio­n of polio and the Rotary Club of Sunderland has donated thousands of pounds since the 1980s towards this goal. Thanks to this commitment we are now down to a handful of cases in two or three countries. In the

1980s when Rotary became involved there were more than 350,000 children paralysed in 125 countries. We are so close now to the biggest achievemen­t in public health since the eliminatio­n of small pox. Support your local Rotary Clubs and they will get the job done.

South Bents Townswomen’s Guild will host the Sunderland Federation Coffee Morning tomorrow in St Mary’s Church hall, Bridge Street at 10am. On Thursday, the Federation Tea Party will take place at 2pm in Ewesley Road Methodist Church hall. Next Wednesday, June 14,

will see South Bents ladies visit a garden centre with lunch and take part in the Federation bowls event from 11am to 1pm at Sunderland Bowling Alley. There will be no evening meeting held on this date.

A Summer Festival Tea Dance will be held in the Barnes Institute on Saturday from 3pm to 6pm. Entry is free and traditiona­l afternoon

Memories of Whitburn, a much loved book about the village by Sybil Reeder, containing old photograph­s and stories collected by the author over several years, was thought to be out-of-print and no longer available.
