We stand together and defiant

- By Richard Ord

There were murmurs from some quarters that the General Election, in light of the terrorist attacks, should be postponed.

These calls have rightly been shouted down.

Party campaigns were once again put on hold this Sunday (unless you were Ukip) but resumed Monday. That’s how it should be.

Yes, the security of the nation has jumped to the top of the political agenda, but, as awful as the Manchester and London attacks have been, to postpone the election would play into the hands of the terrorists.

Saturday’s horrific attack, like the ones before it saw an amazing human response to inhuman acts.

People rushed to danger and put their lives on the line to help others.

Again the call went out for people not to be cowed by terrorism but to continue to live their lives without fear. Easier said than done, particularly for those who have witnessed these horrors first hand.

But, as the benefit concert in Manchester on Sunday night just hours after the London atrocity showed, the many refused to let the terrorist few win.

Families who were caught up in the carnage of the Manchester Arena attack, showed great courage and admirable defiance to return to the city.

It would have been easy for those people to stay at home. Few would have held it against them if they vowed to never set foot in the city again, but they defied the terrorists and turned up in their thousands.

For our political leaders who have been calling on the UK to carry on regardless to call off the election would have a dereliction of duty and a sign of weakness. There has been no sign of weakness, only strength and defiance.

Long may it continue.
