Staff at as nursing home got on their bikes to raise money for a local charity and highlight Dementia Awareness Week.

Budding Bradley Wiggins’ and Laura Kennys at Washington Lodge saddled up on exercise bikes and took part in sponsored charity bike-athon.

The participants cycled an incredible 271 miles and raised more than £200 for the Washington branch of Action on Dementia Sunderland.

Home general manager June Smith said: “It was a tremendous effort from all of the staff, particularly Rachael Longworth, who cycled 155 miles.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated so generously.

“Action on Dementia Sunderland does brilliant work in the local community and we’re very happy to support it in any way we can.”

Action on Dementia Sunderland is a voluntary organisation that was formed to provide support within the City of Sunderland to people who have dementia, as well as their families, carers and friends.

The event was held to highlight Dementia Awareness Week.

The annual fundraising event – organised by Alzheimer’s Society – aims to raise awareness and understanding of dementia, which is set to be one of the 21st century’s biggest killers.

Earlier this year, Qualia Care became the new operator of the home in The Avenue, Washington Village in January.

To celebrate its new beginning – and the village’s historic ties with the United States – Washington Lodge is holding an ‘Independence Open Day’ on Saturday, July 1, from noon to 4pm. All are welcome to attend the family fun day.
