Home full of heroes at 1940s event
The staff and residents of a Sunderland nursing home took a step back in time with a 1940s-style street party in aid of the Help for Heroes charity.
The nostalgic event, which took place at Barnes Court care home in High Barnes, was held to remember the soldiers of the past, whilst raising money to support members of today’s British armed forces.
The home was awash with red, white and blue, with bunting, balloons, flags and war-time themed posters on display.
Ladies at the home had their hair styled with victory rolls and headscarves and staff donned wartime and military-themed fancy dress while residents wore themed accessories.
The street party included some popular foods from the period, such as scones made using a ration-time recipe, spam, rabbit, tripe and tongue, which some of the party-goers were brave enough to try and some even enjoyed.
Tea and cakes were served from vintage china tea sets and cake stands, with songs from the war years providing the entertainment.
The party was held in the same month as the anniversary of D-Day and Armed Forces Day.
The home raised £55 with staff members e also doing a sponsored hike up Mount Snowdon in aid of Help for Heroes.
Home manager Mandy Mackley said: “We had a fantastic time at our street party and it was lovely to see everyone get into the spirit of the day.”
Help for Heroes supports serving and reservist personnel and veterans who have suffered injuries or illness as a result of their service.
It also helps their close family and dependents.
