Grayson needs top support

- By Richard Ord

Before he even gets his feet under the office desk, Simon Grayson may want to wedge shut the revolving door at the Stadium of Light.

While there may have been weeks of inaction on the transfer front at Sunderland, that revolving door has been spinning like helicopter rotor blades with comings and goings.

We’ve seen two consortium of potential buyers ushered in and spat out with their wallets unopened, while star names like Jermain Defoe and Jordan Pickford have flown through the exit door never to return ... in red and white that is. Fabio Borini may well have been going out through the revolving door as Grayson came in on Thursday night.

A wedge for that particular exit should be Grayson’s first buy of the pre-season.

While the welcome from the fans has so far been muted, there’s little doubt it’s much needed.

The longer the club remained managerless, the further it would have drifted at the time when it really needed a firm hand (any hand to be honest) on the tiller. Now that hand is in place, Sunderland can set sail with purpose.

He may not be the biggest name in management, but he at least comes without baggage or inflated expectations from the fans.

Grayson may not know what’s he’s let himself in for managing the rollercoaster club that is Sunderland, but then anyone who has survived a spell at Leeds United with their reputation intact, must have something about them.

Grayson needn’t worry about the fans, they’ll give him all the support he needs, what matters is the support he gets from the boardroom.

A wedge for the door is optional, but a wedge of cash for transfers is a must.
