Home garden event in aid of charity
Staff, families and friends at a Sunderland care home have raised £550 for charity.
The fundraising event took place at Ashwood Court in Hendon and was in aid of Alzheimer Research UK – the power to defeat dementia.
With the temperature above 30C, and with a wide choice of activities, the event attracted a large number of visitors, and even locals who were passing stopped to make a donation and join in the garden games.
There was a tombola, name the bear game, cakes, spongewaterfight, hamburgers and hot dogs, car wash for the more able residents and games for the children.
The event brought together members of different generations, from some only a few months old, to elder ones, who came to visit their grandparents, parents, brothers or sisters, or simply old friends.
Maria Hobkirk, who initiated the event, said the day helped bring people together while supporting a good cause, and at the same time raise awareness and support to those affected by different forms of dementia.
Home manager Haley Greer said: “The majority of our residents have a form of alzheimer and we want to support the families and research in this field.
“This is something close to our hearts and to our home.
Further fundraising took place on Friday when staff, residents and families took part in a sponsored walk from Ashwood Court to Seaburn beach.
And Hayley will take part in a sponsored Iron Man competition to raise funds for the residents.
Ashwood Court is a purpose-built facility offering nursing care for a range of different dementia types and other related conditions.
