England U19 into Euro semi-finals
Ben Brereton and Ryan Sessegnon each scored a brace as England reached the semi-finals of the Under-19 European Championship last night,
They impressively beat Germany 4-1 in Georgia.
Nottingham Forest forward Brereton’s secondhalf double gave England a 2-0 lead and after Tobias Warschewski pulled one back with 14 minutes left, Fulham’s Sessegnon added two late goals.
The Young Lions progressed as Group B winners, having already beaten Holland and Bulgaria.
England face the Czech Republic in Wednesday’s semi-final.
Several of Sunderland’s Championship rivals were in weekend friendly action.
Sheffield United crushed Stocksbridge Park Steels 9-0 as Caolan Lavery fired a treble.
David Brooks and Leon Clarke both netted twice, with Billy Sharp and Enda Stevens also scoring.
Leeds United were 5-1 winners at Guiseley, with doubles from Stuart Dallas and Lee Erwin backed by Marcos Antonsson’s strike.
Norwich, second-game hosts for Sunderland on August 13, were 5-1 winners at Lowestoft after falling behind.
Cameron Jerome, Steven Naismith, Marley Watkins, Nelson Oliveira and Mario Vrancic all notched.
Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich eased to a 5-0 win at Irish club Drogheda, with Freddie Sears (2), Brett Pitman, Kieffer Moore and Joe Garner all netting, while Millwall had Ben Thompson to thank for their 1-1 draw at Dartford.
Bolton came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Chorley, thanks to Harry Brockbank (2) and Ryan White.
Bristol City ran out 110 winners against neighbours Bristol Manor Farm.
