Punk goes pop for series of lectures and city workshops

-

Dust off your DMs – Pop Recs will be hosting a series of lectures to celebrate the 40th anniversary of punk.

One of the most unique and exciting musical movements in history, punk was at its peak from 1976 to 1978. The celebratory talks follow an exhibition which ran earlier this year at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

It explored the extraordinary impact punk had on music, journalism, politics, fashion and design across the UK and looked at how the phenomenon rapidly transformed Britain’s musical landscape, playing a pivotal role in the rise of the independent music scene and challenging the conventional image of women in rock bands.

Now, Pop Recs in Stockton Road has teamed up with The Social Lectures to host a series of talks featuring criticallyacclaimed speakers. Each lecture will be followed by a workshop. Lectures will run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on the following dates:

– Spiral Scratch featuring Dr Pete Dale (Slampt Records, Red Monkey, Milky Wimpshake), who will be discussing independent labels and the DIY ethic.

– Oh Bondage Up Yours featuring Chardine Taylor-Stone (Big Joanie, award-winning cultural producer, writer and feminist activist) who will be discussing black/working-class feminism, queer identities and punk.

– No Future with Pauline Murray (Penetration, The Invisible Girls) who will be discussing punk, unemployment, youth culture and the class system.

– Duty Free Technology with Dr Naomi Griffin (Martha, Lecturer Durham University) who will be discussing modern technology and the ‘business’ of punk. – Sniffin’ Glue with Dr Pete Dale (Slampt Records, Red Monkey, Milky Wimpshake) who will be discussing punk representations in mainstream culture, fanzines and independent promotion.

Spaces are limited and are for over 18s only.

The full course costs £12 and includes a free drink at each session. Single sessions are £3 and also include a free drink.
