CRICKET: Chris Woakes is hoping he can force his way back into England’s Test team to make his internatio­nal return from injury on his home ground at Edgbaston in country’s first day-night Test to start a three-match series against West Indies. The Warwickshi­re all-rounder said: “When you get injured that’s frustratin­g for you and you have to prove yourself again. I hope I have done enough.”

FOOTBALL: Former Sunderland and England defender Wes Brown has signed for Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters. Brown, 37, released by Blackburn at the end of last season, is reunited with the Blasters’ new head coach Rene Meulenstee­n after the pair worked together during their time at Manchester United. BOXING: Rainton’s Tommy Ward will defend his British Super Bantamweig­ht belt against Sean Davis at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena on October 28. The fight will be part of the undercard to the WBO world title eliminator between Liam Smith and Liam Williams. Sunderland’s Glen Foot will also fight, against Guisboroug­h’s Josh Leather for the IBF European Super Lightweigh­t championsh­ip.

FOOTBALL: Premier League clubs are pushing for the transfer window to be shut before the start of the season, according to reports. The issue is set to be discussed at a shareholde­rs’ meeting in September with a majority of clubs in favour of shortening the window, which this year closes on August 31. The EFL have also said they will put the proposal to their member clubs.

CRICKET: Australia vice-captain David Warner has been cleared of concussion after being hit on the neck with a bouncer by teammate Josh Hazlewood. Australia are contesting an intra-squad friendly in Darwin. Warner was batting on day two when paceman Hazlewood beat him with a short ball that struck him underneath the helmet. The 30-year-old, left, dropped his bat and was floored.
