No more excuses please...

- By Richard Ord

They say a week is a long time in politics ... three weeks into our Safe A19 campaign and it feels like an eternity.

And that’s all because of the lack of activity from the powers that be.

Twenty-one days into our campaign and transport chiefs have delivered very little to an anxious public.

While readers have responded in their droves to back our campaign to improve safety on the A19, we’re hearing of more holdups from the Department of Transport.

And the reason for the current delay will not endear them to our readers.

There are no figures available just yet because London’s authorities have yet to submit information to transport chiefs!

The North-South divide is a bone of contention for many in our community and this news from the capital will go down like the proverbial lead balloon.

Easington MP Grahame Morris, who has raised concerns about the safety on the route, wasn’t going to let that news pass without comment.

He said: “I am appalled vital road safety information about the A19 and other dangerous roads have been held up needlessly by the failure of Transport for London and the Metropolitan Police to submit other data for London.

“This is yet another example of Government Minister’s fixation with London at the expense of the needs of our regions.”

It’s a view that will be shared by many in our community.

We have had almost 1,000 signatures on our Safe A19 and huge backing from our readers and other interested parties.

Every one of those supporters deserves action not excuses. We’re not prepared to wait any longer...
