At the Rotary Club fifth Wednesday dinner with family and friends in Chilton Country Hotel, the speaker was Ken Clark, the secretary of Burnmour Conservati­on Group. He spoke about his hobby of bee keeping and demonstrat­ed the hive, equipment and protective clothing used in the porcess of producing honey and wax. The interest of the audience was shown by the many questions asked at the end. Popular entertaine­r Ron Spence will make a welcome return to perform at Houghton Older People’s Enterprise in the Methodist Church hall on Thursday at 1pm. Soup lunches on Tuesdays at All Saints’ parish hall opens again today after the summer break. Call in and enjoy a choice of homemade soups with a roll followed by homemade cake with tea or coffee all for £3. Included is plenty of chat and friendship. The PCC for All Saints’ Church meets tomorrow at 7.30pm in the Chapter House. The coffee morning on Saturday in All Saints’ parish hall from 10.30am to noon is in aid of Safe Water Trust. This charity provides clean drinking water all over the world and the proceeds from this coffee morning will be used to provide drinking water in Uganda. There will be a bring-and-buy stall, a cake stall and a raffle with plenty of coffee, tea and scones and time to chat. On Saturday at 7.30pm, Danny Reed, a Cleadonbas­ed tribute act to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and others, is entertaini­ng at a charity evening in the Pier Pavilion, South Shields, to help the Westovian Theatre Group raise funds for new theatre seating. New Cleadon WI will meet on Monday at 7pm in Cleadon Methodist Church hall, when members and guests will hear about Marley Fire Station. There will also be a harvest stall and a raffle. Take a guided tour of The Port of Sunderland. Meet at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens reception, Burdon Road, to board the bus to the port on Friday, from 10am to noon. This is part of Heritage Open Days project and must be booked by email at janet.robinson@ sunderland.gov.uk The Masonic Temple, Queen Street, will be open on Saturday from 10.30am to 4pm as part of the Heritage Open Day events. The Phoenix Hall, built in 1785, is a Grade 1 listed building and retains virtually all its original features. It is the oldest purpose-built Masonic Temple under the English Constituti­on in existence in the world and is still in continuous use today. The Parish Church of St Ignatius The Martyr, Suffolk Street, will be open on Thursday from 10am to 4pm, Friday from noon to 4pm, Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 11.30am to 1pm as part of the Heritage Open Days
