FATAL CRASH MAN NAMED
A man who died after being hit by a car in Sunderland has been named.
Stephen John Wheeler, 45, from the Tunstall area of the city, was struck on Tunstall Hope Road in the early hours of Sunday.
Northumbria Police said they were alerted to the incident just after 1am.
Medics attended, but Mr Wheeler was confirmed dead at the scene.
Police said they were notified about the incident, which took close to the Venerable Bede School, on Tunstall Hope Bank, at 1.06am on Sunday.
A Northumbria Police spokesman yesterday added: “The man who died in a collision on Tunstall Hope Road in Sunderland in the early hours of Sunday morning has been named as Stephen John Wheeler, who was 45 and from the Tunstall area of Sunderland.”
The North East Ambulance Service were also called to the scene, and deployed an emergency care clinical manager, an ambulance and a Hems (helicopter emergency medical service) with a doctor on board.
After Mr Wheeler’s death was confirmed, tributes were paid to him on the Echo’s Facebook page.
Valerie Robson posted: “So sad, thoughts are with his family at this very sad time x.”
Lisa Martin added: “Thinking of you all, my heart is breaking for you all x.”
Alison Markides Weikel wrote: “RIP, so sad.”
Mr Wheeler’s family were yesterday too upset to talk about the tragic news.
Meanwhile, an 82-yearold man is fighting for his life after being hit by a truck near Beamish Museum.
The man was struck by a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) on the A693, in County Durham, on Friday morning.
He remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, and police are appealing for witnesses.
A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “A pedestrian has suffered lifethreatening injuries after being struck by a HGV on a carriageway.
“The incident happened on the A693 near Beamish Museum at about 11.45am on Friday, September 8.
“The 82-year-old man was taken to hospital, where he is in a life-threatening condition.
“Durham Constabulary are appealing for witnesses.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 139 of September 8.”
