Brendan Rodgers is ‘glad’ that the prospect of a ban for Celtic skipper Scott Brown has not materialis­ed. There was some speculatio­n that the midfielder, who has signed a new two-year deal, could be in trouble after appearing to flick a boot at the face of Hamilton’s defender Giannis Skondras on Friday night. However, Scottish FA’s compliance officer Tony McGlennan has decided no complaint will be raised.

BOXING:

Anthony Joshua cannot wait to show the lessons he learned from his fight with Wladimir Klitschko in his next world heavyweigh­t title defence. Joshua meets his IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev at Cardiff ’s Principali­ty Stadium on October 28 after his planned Las Vegas rematch with Klitschko was scuppered by the Ukrainian’s retirement.

TENNIS:

Rafael Nadal put his remarkable resurgence down to his “love for the game” after claiming a 16th Grand Slam title at the US Open. The 31-year-old Spaniard beat South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-3 6-4 to win his third title in New York. Nadal has now won two Slams this year. “I wake up every morning with the passion to go on court and to try to improve things,” he said.

CYCLING:

Britain’s Chris Froome says winning a fifth Tour de France title will be his “priority and focus” for 2018 and he still has “lots to achieve” in cycling. Froome, 32, has become the first man to follow a Tour victory by winning the Vuelta a Espana in the same year. He said: “A fifth Tour de France title will take my aim but it’s early days and I’ll wait to see what the Giro, Tour and Vuelta courses look like next year.”

FOOTBALL:

Chelsea will support criminal prosecutio­ns and take the “strongest possible action” if any supporters are found to have used anti-Semitic language. A group of Chelsea supporters chanted about Blues striker Alvaro Morata during the win over Leicester City on Saturday. The chant was derogatory towards London rivals Tottenham, who have a large Jewish fanbase.
