Stop this nonsense

-

I moved to Penshaw nearly 15 years ago and I still marvel at the sights of the Herrington Country Park in Penshaw with it’s surrounding countryside just over the road from me.

In fact, when I first moved there, while waiting for a bus into town an old dear was speaking to me and she remarked that she had lived in Penshaw for more than 60 years and had only recently found out that there were houses and a village over the Herrington Country Park.

This was down to the old pit heap, which went when Herrington Country Park was created some years ago.

However, the dreaded progress is starting to rear its ugly head once again.

This time in the shape of a significant proposed development on green belt land adjacent to Herrington Country Park in Penshaw.

Some 400 houses could be built here, overlooked by Penshaw Monument.

The park is one of Sunderland’s most scenic spots and was recently awarded a national Green Flag Award – but these plans could see a major housing development built right next to it on what is basically farm land as there are always stock there, be it ‘Highland coos’, ordinary cows, horses and, of course, sheep.

Almost 10,000 have already done this but we need more, thank you.

The thought of having to look at ugly brick housing instead of the aforementioned green belt and assorted farm animals fills me with dismay.

And me, being a creature of habit will as wellas others will probably keep on depositing vegetable scraps and the like for the animals in the field by the bus stop onto some poor soul’s manicured front lawn – perish the thought. Alan ‘The Quill’ Vincent, Old Penshaw
