‘Good kid’ Browning can bounce back from Forest mistake – boss

Simon Grayson has backed Tyias Browning to bounce back from his mistake against Nottingham Forest, should Marc Wilson miss out again with a groin injury.
Grayson also confirmed that Aiden McGeady has suffered a setback in his comeback from a hamstring problem, but remains hopeful that he will play some part this week.
Browning is ready to return should Wilson be unable to face Cardiff City, with John O’Shea also a doubt with a calf problem.
Grayson said: “The decision not to play Browning against Hull wasn’t based on the mistake he made against Nottingham Forest.
“It was based on having Marc Wilson and Lamine Kone, two of our most experienced defenders, available.
“Ty is available, as is Brendan Galloway, and they are under consideration to play. “Ty is a good kid. “He got punished against Forest for an uncharacteristic mistake, and it was the only mistake he made all night.”
“I felt for him because he had done so well, but as a team we got punished off the back of it.
“It could be that in a few months’ time you make that mistake and you don’t get punished for it, but at the moment any mistakes we make are leading to things going against us.
“But Ty is here for a reason, he is a good player and we will reap the benefits of that.”
McGeady is a doubt again as he continues to recover from a hamstring problem, with Grayson admitting his absence has been frustrating after such a positive start.
“Yes [its frustrating], and it didn’t happen when he was with us it was when he was away with the national squad,” he said.“Last week we thought he would be back fit but then there was a bit of a recurrence, so let’s hope that he’s going to be available againforsomeofthesegames this week.
“It’ll be a concern until he’s on that teamsheet again!
“Let’s hope that the work he is doing now will stand him in good stead for the weeks and months ahead.”
Grayson also said that his side will benefit from Jonny Williams and Callum McManaman’s improving match fitness ahead of a crucial home against Cardiff.
He said: “Jonny has completed a couple of 90 minutes, Callum is getting there.
“The difference between those two is that Jonny had played quite a bit of preseason football for Crystal Palace and for the national team, while Callum has been really limited in terms of the games and minutes he had in pre-season.
“He’s a work in progress, but you can see that it doesn’t take much for him to take people on and get balls into the box, and I think strikers like Vaughany will thrive on that.
“No disrespect to the other lads who have been playing out there, they are different types of wide players.
“The more balls you put into the box, the more the defence has to work and any lapses in concentration can help you get the goals you require.”
