Cogdon the last-gasp Mariners cup hero

South Shields are eagerly awaiting today’s FA Cup draw – after knocking York City out in Saturday’s dramatic third qualifying round tie.

The Mariners stormed into a 2-0 lead, thanks to Carl Finnigan’s penalty and an excellent effort from former Sunderland star Julio Arca.

York, to their credit, rallied with two goals in quick succession from Sean Newton and Jon Parkin.

But Shields ensured a momentous 3-2 victory in stoppage time, with Wearsider Gavin Cogdon heading in from point-blank range from Robert Briggs’ cross.

Now they are just one win away from the first round proper, and a potential tie against the likes of Portsmouth, Bradford City or Charlton.

Arca – who reached the semi-final of the FA Cup with Sunderland in 2004 – was thrilled with Shields’ achievement.

He added: “It was a fantastic game for everyone.

“It’s the first time the club has gone so far in the competition.

“We are achieving good things for the club, and whatever happens in the next round, happens. We’ll see who we get, but another home draw would be fantastic for us.

“We know what we’re capable of doing and I’m sure the lads will be prepared in the right way for that game, like we do for every game.

“We’re looking forward to seeing who we get today.”

York axed Gary Mills after the game, and immediately appointed Darlington boss Martin Gray, the former Sunderland midfielder, as their new manager.

Hartlepool United secured a 1-1 draw at high-flying Woking in the National League Premier Division.

Ryan Donaldson’s 26th minute strike was cancelled out in by Jamie Philpot just before the break.

Pools boss Craig Harrison said: “Woking have got the best home record in the league, so we have to be pleased. They are one point off the top and while we are never satisfied, as we did not win, given the circumstances we will take a point.”
