Delete field from the list

I read with interest the letters regarding the council’s Core Strategy Plan, and note that North Hylton has yet to be mentioned.

Perhaps that’s because there are a grand total of nine houses there. A dead end road leading to the Shipwrights Pub and a farm beyond

However, don’t be fooled into thinking this is the great hamlet it once was, this stretch of Ferryboat Lane is, without doubt, the worst road in Sunderland, impassable for two cars, and acceptable to drive on the footpath.

It’s interesting watching the cyclists on this dedicated C2C route negotiate the traffic to the once quiet dairy farm, now a busy livery yard, all jostle for position on this impassable road, lots of pub traffic, then last, but not least, the good old boy racers using this straight stretch as a rally stage.

Now just for good measure throw in a green belt development of 135 houses, let’s say two cars per household, the access to the site 50 metres off the A1231, and within spitting distance for the main A19 roundabout and you’re almost there but not quite.

The clever motorist leaving Sunderland and heading to the A19 now avoids queueing traffic by ‘rat running’ through Castletown to rejoin the A1231 further along and coming out at, you guessed it, Ferryboat Lane, directly opposite our new green belt development.

It’s unbelievable to think it’s even been considered and as far as protecting the environment, don’t get me started.

This field should be the first to be deleted from the list, it’s about 600 yards from the first Washington sign and boundary.

The purpose of the green belt is to prevent urban sprawl, protect the environment, and stop Washington merging into Sunderland.

This established wild life corridor should be left for our children to decide its fate in the next Core Strategy Plan. Bridget Cockburn, Castletown
