Hero Kane: It must be a team effort

-

England hot-shot Harry Kane may be in unstoppable form, but he does not want to shoulder expectation alone at next summer’s World Cup.

With Wayne Rooney retired, the hopes of a nation are transitioning swiftly to Kane, who has followed up successive Premier League golden boots with a streak of 14 goals in nine games for club and country.

He has now struck 11 times in 22 caps for his country, but, even if he continues in the same vein, others will be expected to follow his lead rather than look on in awe.

“It isn’t down to just me, it’s down to the whole team,” said Kane (pictured), who will look to maintain his fine run in tomorrow’s now-meaningless final qualifier in Lithuania (5pm).

“We’ve all got to work together as a unit. I feel physically great, every game I expect to score so I have to keep it going.

“When you’ve got someone scoring goals it helps and hopefully I can continue that from now until then, we’ll see what happens. But I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself personally and I don’t want the team to get too far ahead of themselves.

“I just have to keep doing what I’m doing for club and for country and see what happens next year. We can’t put any limit on what we can achieve, we just have to go there and see what happens.”

Team-mate Gary Cahill backed up Kane’s sentiments, saying: “He’s been fantastic for us but you don’t to go into a tournament with everything on Harry Kane. We want him to be in fantastic form but we want everyone to contribute.”

In tomorrow’s game, boss Gareth Southgate is looking for another victory. “There will be England supporters going to Lithuania and we have a duty to put a performance on. We want to stay unbeaten, we want to go and win.

“There are one or two players we’d definitely like to have a look at and it’s one of very few games we have now to build towards the World Cup.”
