Staniforth hoping Lady Cats heap more misery on Yeovil
Sunderland Ladies will be looking to continue their Indian sign over Yeovil tomorrow, but won’t take a win for granted.
The Lady Black Cats, who have one win from two Women’s Super League matches to date, make the long trip to Huish Park (kick-off 2pm).
Sunderland won at the Somerset ground as recently in May, during the Spring Series, when they beat Yeovil due to an own goal in the opening two minutes.
The two teams played against each other in the sixth round of the 2016 SSE Women’s FA Cup when a double from Brooke Chaplen took them to a comfortable victory.
Back in 2014, Sunderland faced Yeovil twice in the FA WSL2 and won both fixtures, conceding just once.
The Glovers have begun this season with two defeats and no goals, but those stats and the history between the clubs does not lull Cats skipper Lucy Staniforth into a false sense of security. “Yeovil will definitely be a hard game,” said the 25-yearold.
“No game in this league is easy, but we will definitely be looking to get all three points. That’s our main aim.
“It’s not going to be a walkover or an easy game – it was quite close the last time we played them, probably down to our own faults as we should have killed the game off.
“Hopefully, we can learn from the game last time in the Spring Series, build and score some goals.
“Against Reading, we scored early and held on to that lead. That’s definitely something we are going to have to use throughout the season.
“We’ve got disciplined players, so it is a system we can use. We just need to be careful so we can create stuff and hurt teams.”
Sunderland won their season opener against Reading through Simona Koren’s goal, but went on to suffer a heavy 6-0 loss against Chelsea.
But the Lady Black Cats are currently eighth on goal difference, meaning a win could see them catapulted into the top five.
Yeovil have struggled to find their footing as they were beaten 4-0 by reigning champions Manchester City and lost 1-0 to Bristol.
