Chance to be part of Tall Ships

- By Richard Ord

If you fancy playing a vital role in what is sure to be one of the most prestigious events being staged here in the North East next year, then now’s your chance. For the organisers planning Tall Ships Sunderland are on the look-out for 350 volunteers from throughout the region – but in particular they’re wanting people from the city . Volunteers would take on a wide range of roles, including event support workers, ship liaison officers and event co-ordinators. Each and every one of them will play an “integral” role in making the nautical spectacular a success. Victoria French, head of Events at Sunderland City Council, said volunteers will come from near and far, including those who have taken part in previous Tall Ships events. “We know we will attract people from Sunderland which is great but also want people who have volunteered on other events throughout the North East and beyond, and other Tall Ships events. “The experience that people will get from volunteering for a large-scale event will be brilliant. It will be fun. “People will have a wonderful time and it is something that they can be proud of, that they are part of the event.” Coun John Kelly, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming people from across our region but in particular, people from Sunderland who want to be part of this huge event.” The four days of the Sunderland leg of the 2018 races, will last from July 11 to 14 next year. So if you don’t want to miss the boat, apply to volunteer now – and be a part of something that is expected to attract 1.5 visitors to Sunderland.
