RYHOPE, RED STAR HIT BY HEAVY DEFEATS

LAY SEES RED AS RYHOPE SUCCUMB TO SEVEN-UP WHITLEY BAY ON DISAPPOINTING NIGHT

-

Ryhope CW and Seaham Red Star both endured heavy defeats in Ebac Northern League Division One last night.

Ryhope CW travelled to Whitley Bay and started the game brightly, forcing keeper Dan Lister into a fine fifthminute save. Lister made another excellent stop to deny Ryhope on 16 minutes.

Matty Weirs then hit the top of the bar with a curling effort.

However, Gary Pearson’s men fell behind after 36 minutes, when Peter GlenRavenhill sidefooted home. David Gordon’s own goal, deflecting in a Kyle Patton effort, doubled Bay’s lead just before the break.

Ten minutes into the second half, it was 3-0 to Bay when Glen-Ravenhill scored his second after good work from Potter.

Ryhope’s hopes were all but over when Danni Lay saw red for a poor 57th-minute challenge on Scott Jasper, and Bay capitalised. Kyle Patton flicked home Potter’s cross for 4-0 on minutes and Liam Brooks smashed home a fifth, following Matty Cornish’s set-up.

Glen-Ravenhill completed his hat-trick, tapping in after Cornish’s shot came back off the post, then Cornish made it seven, rounding keeper Jonny Ball and firing his shot under a diving defender.

North Shields won 5-1 at Seaham Red Star to move top of the table.

Star enjoyed a great start, with Liam McBryde scoring after just seven minutes.

However, just seconds later, the Robins were level, through Ryan Carr, when goalkeeper Jordan Harkess dropped the ball following a corner and Carr tapped the ball home.

The visitors then took the lead in the 15th minute, when Gareth Bainbridge’s strong header found the net.

Bainbridge extended the lead with his second, then Carr quickly made it 4-1. James Luccock hit a last-gasp fifth to take North Shields above Morpeth into pole position.

In the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup, Newton Aycliffe demolished Ryton & Crawcrook Albion 5-0.

Nathan Stephenson’s 22nd-minute effort broke the deadlock, and Stuart Weldon made it 2-0 when he converted a Paul Weldon cross.

Jack Oliver made the game safe at 3-0 in the 75th minute, with an excellent strike. Kurt Matthews and Stuart Banks extended the lead before the end.

Northallerton beat Ashington 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Aaron Ramsbottom’s free-kick and a Nick Martin strike had Northallerton two up, but Callum Johnston and Ben Harmison got Ashington level.
