Hill relishing battle in Cats derby
Durham Women defender Kathryn Hill is relishing a crack at local rivals Sunderland Ladies tomorrow, writes Mark Donnelly.
The teams meet in the first round of group matches in the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup at New Ferens Park (7.30pm).
Both sides have started their respective league campaigns well, having won twice and lost once in their opening three games, and the pair will now meet in what is sure to be a keenly-contested cup tie.
WSL1 side Sunderland have dominated the meetings between the sides in the past - winning all three games - but the Wildcats are unbeaten at home in almost a year and will fancy their chances of causing an upset.
“We’re looking forward to the Sunderland game, especially after that great win over Watford last time out,” said Hill, who was on the scoresheet in Sunday’s 4-0 win against the Golden Girls.
“We just need to make sure we go in with a little bit of confidence so that we can compete.
“It’s a cup game, so anything can happen, and we’ll be going into the game looking for a win.
“I love a local derby and I’m sure it will add to the excitement, especially for those players who are local. We’re ready for the game and the challenge of playing a higher division opposition, so bring it on.
“It’s obviously a rivalry so it’s a game that everyone, especially the fans, are looking forward to.”
The competition has been revamped, and there will be penalty shoot-out if group matches are drawn.
Durham are dedicating the fixture to charity Breast Cancer Care and will be raising funds on the night.
