A grandmother who had to ask family members to fasten her shoes has undergone an amazing weight-loss transformation.

Margaret Hewitson, 61, looks like a different person after losing more than 8st.

The grandmother-ofseven joined the Easington Slimming World group just over a year ago, after getting to the point where her weight meant day-to-day tasks had become a struggle.

Margaret who lives with husband John, 63, in Avon Street, was left gasping for breath from just walking up the stairs and was taking up to six insulin injections a day to help control her Type 2 diabetes.

But now she has lost an incredible 8st 3lb - going from 19st 3lb and a dress size 30-32, to a healthy 11st and a size 14.

She said: “The weight I was carrying was terrible, I could not put on my own shoes or tie them up - I had to ask for help.

“I had to ask my husband or my son to do it for me and I couldn’t put my socks on either because I was so big I couldn’t bend over. “It was humiliating. “But then my daughter asked me to go to Slimming World with her, so I went but didn’t know what to expect. “But as soon as I went in I was greeted with a lot of smiling faces and when I came out I knew I would be going back every week.

“Every week I was amazed how much weight I lost and I am now a target member.”

Margaret said her weight piled on after her mum sadly died causing her to comfort eat, which saw her ‘snack from morning to night’ and eat unhealthy meals such as fish and chips and Chinese takeaways. But after starting the group she has turned her life around and swapped the snacks for homecooked dishes which has meant she no longer needs treatment for her diabetes.

She said: “I go every week and my health problems have gone - I no longer take any insulin injection and my sugar levels are good due to the weight loss.

“I can tie my shoes, walk up and down stairs without gasping and I’ve even got a Bichon Frise puppy which helps me get out and about on steady walks twice a day.

“I love to cook now and plan my meals.

“If I want chocolate I will have it, but I have to be careful because of my diabetes.

“I am grateful I have a team leader like Barbara Barnes - she is one in a million.

“When I look at photos now I can’t believe it is me!

“If I can loose weight anyone can, Slimming World has given me my life back and for that I will be forever grateful.”
