Willington spot on for cup booster at Brandon

-

Willington won through in a shoot-out to progress to the second round of the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup last night.

Brandon United were knocked out by visitors Willington, who won 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the all-Second Division showdown.

Jack Pounder gave Brandon the lead a minute into the second half, but Damon Ellis levelled matters.

Hebburn Town had to fight all the way to send lowly Alnwick Town packing.

The visitors, struggling at the wrong end of the Ebac Northern League’s Second Division, threatened an upset when their impressive start brought a 2-0 lead.

Tony Brown fired a brace to inspire Alnwick, with the second goal a stunning effort into the top corner of the home net.

In the second half, highflying Hebburn pulled one back through Craig Malley and Jason Blackburn soon made it 2-2.

Jack Donaghy then completed the fightback, firing Hebburn 3-2 ahead in the dying minutes to ensure their progress.

Scott Heslop’s goal six minutes from time earned Dunston UTS a 1-0 victory over West Allotment Celtic in a game of few chances.

In the only league game, Morpeth Town reclaimed top spot in Division One, thanks to an exciting 3-2 win over Marske United.

Adam Wheatley headed Marske in front, but Liam Henderson equalised and Keith Graydon fired the home side 2-1 up.

Craig Gott’s stunning 40-yarder hauled Marske level, but a tremendous winner from Cameron Walton, with just four minutes to go, sealed Morpeth’s victory, taking them back above North Shields into pole position.
