McKinlay impact lifts Grayson

Simon Grayson says Billy McKinlay has brought a “different perspective” since joining his Sunderland coaching staff on a temporary basis.

Sunderland scout McKinlay has joined the coaching staff while assistant manager Glynn Snodin recovers from a period of ill health having been advised to take some time off.

McKinlay, who was assistant to David Moyes at Real Sociedad, joined the club last season to help the scouting operation.

He was on the bench for the 1-1 draw with QPR at the Stadium of Light last weekend and Grayson has praised the impact made by the experienced coach.

“Glynn has been off poorly since the Hull game,” said Grayson.

“We have managed in between, but it got to the stage where we needed a different voice, another eyes and ears to see something from a different perspective.

“He is very knowledgable has played to a good level, been at some good clubs and worked under some very good managers.

“He gives us a different perspective and he will ultimately work as hard as any one of us to turn the draws and defeats into victories.”

McKinlay, who is assisting Grayson in first-team matters on a temporary basis until Snodin’s return, will again be on the bench at Brentford this weekend.

Former Scotland midfielder McKinlay, 48, has also had spells at Fulham, Watford and Norwegian side Stabaek.
