Bees boss Smith: We were well below our standards

-

Brentford manager Dean Smith was disappointed by his side on Saturday, despite their fightback from two goals down to draw 3-3 at home to Sunderland.

“It wasn’t a great game,” said Smith, who had hoped to record a second successive home victory, following the previous week’s defeat of Millwall.

“I thought we were very much below our standards.

“I said to the players before the game that you have to go and earn things; you’re not given anything in this league

“We gave them three goals. We came away with a point which shows character, but I’m disappointed with the amount of mistakes and poor decisions we made during the game”.

Smith felt that the penalty award, which led to Sunderland going 3-1 up just before the break, was the right decision. “It was the correct decision. I think Ryan (Woods) should have brought the player (Duncan Watmore) down on the halfway line, but he ends up chasing him all the way back and bringing him down inside the box.” said Smith.

Brentford came back strongly to secure their draw, with the subs making an impact. “I was pleased with the impact that the substitutes made,” added Smith on brentfordfc.com. “We’ll dust ourselves down and probably see today as a good point having been 3-1 down, but, at this moment in time, I’m disappointed we didn’t take all three”.
