TWR BIFOLDS WEARSIDE LEAGUE: FOUR GOALS IN EACH HALF STEERS FORD QUARRY MEN TO BIG WIN
Sunderland West End moved into sixth position after a resounding 8-1 win at lowly Coxhoe Athletic on Saturday.
However, they had to come from behind to do so, with David Paul having given the Beechfield Park men the ideal start, with a sixthminute opener.
Two goals in quick succession from Bryan Norton and Brad Wilson turned the game around, and West End were dominant, going 4-1 up at the interval.
David Keithley’s header in the 25th minute made it 3-1 and Mark Catcheside scored from the penalty spot 10 minutes later.
There was no let-up in the second half. Mark Robinson fired home just after half-time and prolific marksman Anthony Ross scored two goals in three minutes, in the 75th and 78th minutes, before Robinson’s header completed the rout.
Joint-manager Anth Nelson said: “I was overjoyed and it was a great team performance.
“We were very good on the day and played our best football of the season, to date.”
Silksworth CW secured an excellent 2-1 away win at Leam Rangers, to record their fifth victory of the season.
The Wearsiders took a 14th minute lead when Steven Bagshaw tapped in at the near post.
But, in a tightly-contested clash, they had to wait until the 90th minute to make the game safe, when Nathan Mason’s header beat goalkeeper Lee Smith, to make it 2-0.
Leam did score a consolation goal a minute later, when Niki Langston scored from outside the box, but Silksworth held firm to see out three crucial points. Harton and Westoe CW gained a narrow 3-2 home victory over lowly Prudhoe Town.
Harton took a fourth-minute lead when Aaron Coulson’s right-footed shot beat goalkeeper Liam Blair. Six minutes later, he headed home the second, before Harley Davison made it 3-0 in the 25th minute, nodding in another cross.
In the second half, Prudhoe made a fight of it and pulled one back when Ben Cooper sliced into his own net on the hour. Two minutes from time, David Wansell headed home for 3-2 to ensure a nervous final few minutes, but Harton held on.
South Shields Reserves were overwhelmed in a 4-0 defeat at Wolviston.
Tony Johnson opened the scoring in the sixth minute, but Shields kept fighting and only fell 2-0 behind on the hour mark, when Philip Otele smashed the ball home following a corner.
Six minutes later, following another corner, Andrew McGirr headed home the third goal and Junior Masandi ran clear and rounded keeper Jack Ramage to complete the scoring on 84 minutes.
Hebburn Town Reserves consolidated top spot thanks to a comprehensive 7-1 win at fifth-placed Annfield Plain.
Hebburn raced into a 5-0 half-time lead, never looking back after Joe Warren’s freekick opener. He doubled the lead after 17 minutes when he easily beat goalkeeper Stephen Jackson.
Scott McCullough made it 3-0, then Dylan Nesbitt’s brace piled on the misery for the home side.
Nathan Sinclair added a sixth Hebburn strike before Dan Maddison got Annfield Plain on the board. But Sinclair had the last word, hitting his second, and the visitors’ seventh, with the last kick of the game.
Redcar Athletic stayed second after a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Darlington Reserves.
Two goals in the first half were enough for the win. Michael Woodhouse smashed his shot into the top corner for the opener, then Joe Bennett’s free-kick flew past keeper Matthew Bancroft six minutes later.
Hartlepool walloped bottom club Windscale 6-3 to move up to ninth, Jamie Tumilty hitting a hat-trick, backed by strikes from Sam Cook, Paul Moss and an own goal.
Fourth-top Boldon CA’s eagerly-awaited match at morning leaders Cleator Moor was postponed, because of a waterlogged pitch.
Richmond Town were comfortable 3-0 winners over St Mary’s 1947 in the North Riding Cup. Chris Pattison and Scott Ryan (2) did the damage.
