A striking ship is sure to make a big impression when she comes to Wearside.

The Alexander von Humboldt 2 has signed up to be part of The Tall Ships Races Sunderland 2018.

The six-year-old vessel from Germany is the second to bear the Alexander von Humboldt name and was built in 2011.

The Bremerhaven-based class A ship is 187 foot long and has a permanent crew of 24. She can also take up to 55 trainees.

Her rig stands more than 118 foot above the waterline and she is a squarerigger driven by 24 sails.

The ship has been entered into the races by Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training and is striking on the high seas with her green hull and sails.

Watch out for more features in the weeks to come on the ships which are coming to Sunderland.

It’s less than a year until the Sunderland coastline is filled with the sight of magnificent tall ships.

The Tall Ships Races are coming to the city next July and they’re expected to bring 1.5 million people as well as up to 80 vessels.
