Best of luck to the new boss

- By Richard Ord

Chris Coleman describes himself as a lucky man to land the Sunderland job.

Just how lucky we will find out tonight as he takes charge of his first game for the Black Cats.

Given their nickname is associated with good luck, it’s been in short supply of late for the Black Cats of Wearside.

The club is hoping Lady Luck smiles on Chris Coleman ... and so do we.

Sunderland has tried every combination of manager in recent years without producing the consistency the fans crave.

We’ve had managers young and old, some with great experience, others bursting with potential.

There have been those with a volatile temperament and others with a level-headed approach.

They’ve all had their moments, but all have failed to bring long-term stability.

Coleman’s claim to be a lucky man is something new. In recent years, Sunderland have tried every combination of manager ... a lucky one is what all the fans crave and need.

That Sunderland have acquired a good manager, is not in question.

What he has achieved with Wales is a minor miracle. He dragged what many considered an average international team to the brink of the Euro 2016 championship final.

You don’t do that without a good footballing brain, and a slice of luck.

Already, he’s making the right noises. He is positive and pragmatic, calling on everyone to muck and work hard. And we all know the harder you work the luckier you get.

There’s an expression that goes: “better an ounce of luck than a pound of gold.”

Coleman knows there’s no gold for transfers, here’s hoping he has plenty of luck. He’s going to need it.
