Ice festive day for whole family
POPULAR OPEN AIR RINK RETURNS AS PART OF CITY’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAMME
There’s snow much to do this Christmas in Sunderland as a frosty favourite comes back to the city …
Prepare to lace up your skates and put your best foot forward as Sunderland’s popular open air ice rink returns.
The well-loved part of the city’s Christmas programme has been brought again by the city’s Business Improvement District and will arrive at its Keel Square abode on November 30 and continue until January 7, to entertain guests of all ages for the third year running.
The launch night, which will run from 6pm to 7pm, will feature a fabulous Ice Gala performance from professional solo skaters Gary Beacom and Lisa Brewin, to officially open the rink.
Following their no-doubt, awe-inspiring performance, which will leave you wishing you too could do fancy moves such as the Lutz and Axel, the ice rink will open to the public, where you can channel your inner figure skater to your heart’s content.
And if it turns out figure skating isn’t your forte, every Friday night the rink will swing it back to the seventies, eighties and nineties, giving guests the chance to belt out their favourite hits and of course, show off their snazziest dance moves.
For those not old enough to remember any music premillennium, or simply for those with two left dancing feet, there’s a full programme of events to help get you in the festive spirit too.
These include a day skating with some of the world’s coolest superheroes and princesses on December 2, pirouetting in your PJs at the Snowy Sleepover on December 9, and using the force to master the ice universe at a special tribute to Star Wars on December 16.
There’s also a festive fancy dress party at the Christmas Countdown on December 23, where everyone is invited to rock up in a popping red Santa suit – or other festive getup – to celebrate the season in style.
And if that’s not enough to make you feel all warm inside this winter, The Peacock will be dishing up hot, delicious treats every Friday, Saturday and Sunday to keep you – and your tummy – happy.
But guess what? The fun doesn’t stop once Christmas arrives, you’ll be glad to know. Saturday, December 30, will see the rink get an old school makeover for an evening of rock ‘n’ roll, and the following night (December 31), guests can take to the rink for the final hours of 2017, for a boogie and a mulled wine or two to toast the new year …
