Top spot the aim for Sunderland Ladies

-

Top spot in Group One North is up for grabs when Sunderland Ladies host Liverpool in tomorrow’s FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup tie at South Shields (6pm).

Both sides have already qualified for the quarterfinals, but the Wearsiders, despite trailing the Reds by a point after three sectional ties, will finish as group winners if they can beat the Merseysiders at Mariners Park.

Liverpool have already beaten Sunderland 4-1 in the league this season.

Sunderland goalkeeper Rachael Laws is ready for the return to action after a blank fortnight, and she said: “It’s not always ideal having a couple of weeks off as you like to pick up the momentum, but we’ve been training really hard with good intensity.

“We’ve had our full squad together where some other teams have internationals missing, and the girls have stuck together really well.

“We’re looking forward to playing 90 minutes again. Both sides are through, but we’re going into the game like any other and have prepared in the same way.

“Hopefully we can play well, win the game and top the group.

“Our main aim was to get through to the quarter-finals, which we have done, but, when we look back at that league game, we don’t think the 4-1 result reflected the game.

“We needed to take our chances; we went in at 1-1 but could have been a couple of goals up and then it would have been a different game.

“The tactics will be very similar. Natasha Harding obviously scored three but it’s not just her, they’ve got a great forward line that’s quick and scores goals – it’s what you need in the Super League.” *
