Waters retains his national title

JOY FOR SUNDERLAND ABC TALENT BUT ONLY AFTER MISSING CHANCE TO WIN IN RING

-

Travis Waters has retained his National Club for Young Persons Championship title.

The Sunderland ABC fighter impressed in his semi-final against Inder Bassi from Hoddesdon Boxing Academy at Liverpool last week, in his fourth contest in the competition this year.

And he was all geared up for Monday’s final, when he was scheduled to take on South Wales representative Jake Tinklin (Pantside) in Gateshead.

But there was a big letdown on the morning of the fight when Tinklin pulled out of the contest.

It did mean the 21-yearold Waters was automatically handed the win though - to become a double national champion.

“Everyone at the club passes on congratulations to Travis,” said coach Dean Hassan.

“I’m sure he would have won the fight. I don’t know why his opponent pulled out maybe he felt that Travis was always going to be too good for him?

“It was a shame though as you always want to win titles in the ring.

“And it was a disappointment for his supporters. There was a good number of family and friends going to see him and they were denied a good night too.”

This is the last year Waters can compete in this competition, with all his targets now coming in the senior ranks.

And it is hoped he gets some international recognition having lifted this title in successive years.

“Travis is getting stronger all the time,” added Hassan.

“He can not do any more than winning the title for a second time. He works hard and deserves all his success.

“It would be great if he could get international recognition.”
