Moyes: Obiang wonder strike a shock to me

-

West Ham boss David Moyes admitted that he was shocked by Pedro Obiang’s magnificent opening goal in last night’s Premier League draw at Tottenham.

The Hammers were pegged back for a 1-1 finish, but exSunderland manager Moyes delighted in Obiang’s effort, saying: “It was a brilliant strike.

“I have no idea where that strike came from Pedro because I can’t say I’ve seen it in training, but I’ve got to say he didn’t half strike it sweetly.

“We didn’t have many shots but the one we did have was very good. I had a look of disbelief on my face and rightly so, because we hadn’t been up the pitch that often.

“After we scored, Kouyate had a great chance to make it 2-0, too, so we might not have had a lot of shots and if we’d gone 2-0 up it would have been a real surprise, but going 1-0 up was a big enough surprise for me at the time.” West Ham, who were in the relegation zone on Tuesday morning, would have climbed to 11th had they held on for the win. Moyes had to settle for a rise to 15th and he added: “Confidence is growing with our results. “We have started to look stronger, but then we have lost a few goals. In the main, we have only lost one game in seven. They are disappointed they didn’t win it, but it was a really good point for us”

Moyes insisted that he knows nothing about a transfer rumour linking striker Andy Carroll with a move to Chelsea.

West Ham must now prepare for Sunday’s FA Cup tie at League One high-fliers Shrewsbury Town. Moyes said: “We’ve got to get on with it and we’ll go there and try and win and get through to the next round.”
