Bargains galore in the 1970 fab Sunderland store sales

-

The sales were in full swing and there were plenty of bargains in Sunderland in 1970.

Men’s car coats were a mere £7, 19 shillings and sixpence at Liverpool House where you could also get brown brogue Chelsea boots for 79 shillings and 11 pence.

Nylon dresses for infants were selling at 29 shillings and 11 pence, while fancy knit wool bed jackets for women were 35 shillings and 11 pence.

Binns was just as popular. It was selling ready made curtains from £3, blue service shirts from 25 shillings and brushed nylon slips at 15 shillings. You could get children’s nightwear from 17 shillings and 11 pence and men’s raincoats from 5 guineas.

Over at Joplings, step-in girdles were 10 shillings and Jersey wool dresses were 59 shillings and 11 pence ‘to clear.’

There was lots to browse through at Blacketts where a fridge was 35 guineas, and a spin dryer 19 and a half guineas. How about men’s lounge suits for £11, 19 shillings and sixpence. At Granthams, 12-foot wide broadloom carpets were 39 shillings and sixpence a square yard. For those keen on saving space, how about a 115 guinea three-piece suite which converted into a double bed?
